Resolved: Missing Smart Phone

stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full
AI Highlights
  • Wife at UPMC; her phone has been missing for two days.
  • The phone contains doctors' numbers and may have been stolen or lost by staff.
Updated by user Feb 11, 2026

The phone was sent with the dirty sheets, and that company found it, and returned it to the hospital. I would like to thank UPMC for their help and apologize for being a pain in the neck.

Original review Feb 06, 2026

My wife was taken to UPMC very ill and incoherent. I could not get in touch with her, so when we went to see her, they said her Smartphone was missing, and they were looking for it for 2 days.

The phone was either stolen by staff or lost by staff, as she can't get out of bed. That phone did not walk out on its own. The phone has all her doctors' numbers and she needs them. She is still there, but her phone isn't.

I hope they find it, but I suggest keeping any valuables at home. If the phone shows up, I will add it to this post.

User's recommendation: Leave anything of value at home, there are too many people going in and out of the room 24 hours a day. It can be a great hospital, but it only takes one thief in the staff to rob your loved ones.

My father was given zyprexa after we repeatedly told staff and doctors that he had a bad reaction to it the night he ended up in the ER hallway for 7 hours.

stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full
AI Highlights
  • An elderly father waited 7 hours in the ER hallway.
  • Zyprexa caused a paralyzed tongue and confusion; it was given again twice, causing setbacks.

Do not take your elderly loved ones there unless you want them sedated and restrained. After a 7-hour wait in the brightly lit ER hallway, my 82-year-old father became confused, so their go-to protocol is to give Zyprexa.

This gave my father a paralyzed tongue and caused further confusion. After letting staff know, they continued to give it to him 2 more times, causing major setbacks.

Preferred solution: More staff and communication

User's recommendation: Never go there

AI Highlights
  • I canceled the sleep study due to illness hours before the appointment.
  • A letter warned less than 2 hours' notice would require seeking elsewhere.

I was scheduled for a sleep study when I developed a health issue that would have interfered with the study literally hours before I was to arrive. I called and after talking to a staff member decided it was pointless to go ahead with the study.

Later I found a bullying letter on my UPMC portal stating that if I canceled an appointment with less than 2; hours notice again I would be asked to seek services elsewhere.

When I spoke to the lab manager he refused to explain to me how I was to give 24 hours notice when I got ill just hours before the appointment. Will not return

Preferred solution: Apology

UPMC Customer Service

stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full
AI Highlights
  • UPMC doctors provide superior care.
  • Billing issues required a letter to the CEO.
  • Billing is outsourced overseas, and wait times were long.

Since relocating to Pennsylvania, I've visited Excela, AHN and UPMC. UPMC by far is the better.

Their Physicians/staffs provide superior care. However, UPMC Customer Service falls short, providing Customer Service. Ex; Resolving a previous billing issue "created by" UPMC, required a letter from me to Leslie Davis, UPMC CEO (verified by their records). The saga continues.

Shame on UPMC for outsourcing billing issues overseas! I spent over 10 minutes waiting to speak with an agent. When connected, I had difficulty with her accent due to my hearing impairment and requested a transfer to the USA. Following approximately 20 minutes on the phone, the resolution will be my responsibility.

I inquired of Tara - Team Lead, how do I reach a USA agent when I call again. Tara, " I apologize, you'll have to follow the same procedure." UPMC sadly lacks empathy and desire to assist senior citizens with hearing and maybe other impairments.

They take from us our time! I doubt a reply will be received as requested.

User's recommendation: Not much choice in healthcare.

Many of the nurses are rude and disrespectful

AI Highlights
  • I asked for clarification on what Dr. Daniel said.
  • ER staff were rude and I believe Dr. Daniel lied.

I simply asked a question to clarify what Dr. Daniel who treated me said to me.

Apparently he did not tell the nurses in the ER. From Patricia receiving ER calls to the ones working closely with the Dr.

They are rude and disrespectful.

Dr. Daniel should not have lied to me nor should have the nurses treated me the way they did for simply trying to clarify.

Charged for service not done

stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full
AI Highlights
  • UPMC billed Medicare wellness with my visit I did not have.
  • Medicare denied the claim; charged full amount; language barriers.

I received a bill from UPMC with an annual wellness for Medicare added to the bill on top of my regular doctor visit. I didn't have a wellness exam done as it wasn't time for it.

Medicare, of course, denied the claim because it wasn't due. UPMC charged the entire amount. I called customer service and spoke with someone who didn't understand English very well. I couldn't convince them that the wellness exam wasn't done.

I requested to speak to an American. I was connected with someone else, who wasn't much better at the English language.

They finally said they would investigate the charge. I don't know where I stand at this point.

Pros:
  • Doctors are mostly ok
Cons:
  • Send you to to many other services for what the doctor took care

Preferred solution: Price reduction

User's recommendation: Check what UPMC is going to charge you with before you leave the office

Incompetence, Delays, Indifference & No Help

stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full
AI Highlights
  • Ortho diagnosed spondylolisthesis; PT prescribed.
  • MRI showed herniated disc; spondylolisthesis mild.
  • Delays and costs; sought private care.

I sought care from an orthopedic doctor for severe pain in my hip and buttocks. He ordered an x-ray and diagnosed spondylolisthesis as the cause of the pain. I was given a prescription for physical therapy and sent on my way.

After contacting half a dozen UPMC physical therapy facilities, I was unable to find one that could see me within 3 1/2 weeks at the soonest. Most never answered the phone or returned my calls. I self-paid for private PT for several weeks, but my pain only worsened. At this point, I was unable to walk around my block without having to crouch down to the ground several times to temporarily relieve the pain. I wound up going to the ER at St. Margaret's because the pain had become unbearable. Based on the diagnosis of the orthopedic doctor I had originally seen, I was given a prescription for oral methylprednisolone.

After finishing the course of steroids my pain was unrelieved, so I contacted the orthopedist's office and received an order for an MRI. I called to schedule it and was told they were scheduling 2 months out. When I explained I was in extreme pain, the very kind scheduler found a cancellation and I was able to get an MRI 10 days later.

The MRI showed I had a herniated lumbar disc that was compressing a nerve root. The spondylolisthesis I was originally diagnosed with was mild and not the cause of my pain. I wasn't able to be seen by a spinal specialist for another 2 weeks after the MRI.

The spinal doctor spent about 5 minutes with me and explained nothing about my condition. He said he would order a spinal corticosteroid injection and that I would receive a call from the hospital to schedule the procedure. I asked him if he knew approximately how long it would take to get an appointment for this and he told me everything takes time these days and that he couldn't even get a reservation at a restaurant when he wanted it. This led me to assume he wasn't overly concerned about my pain.

The hospital failed to contact me about scheduling the procedure for several days (still in pain), so I called UPMC scheduling and was told the hospital hadn't received the order from my doctor. The woman I spoke to very kindly offered to contact the doctor's office to get the order and call me back to schedule the procedure. This was a Friday and when I didn't get called back I assumed I'd hear from the hospital on Monday. That didn't happen, so I called scheduling again. I was told the order had been received, but a hold had been placed on all CT-guided injections and they could no longer schedule the procedure. She added that they were already booked 3 months in advance. When I asked what other options I had to receive treatment from UPMC, she said she didn't know.

Out of desperation, I made an appointment with a chiropractor and an acupuncturist. I'll have to pay for both myself. I pay almost $9,000 per year for health insurance and with copayments to specialists and the portion of my care that isn't covered, I've spent hundreds of dollars and received nothing but incompetence, delays, and indifference from UPMC.

Fitting I suppose, since as far as I'm concerned, they've taken both the health and the care out of healthcare.

User's recommendation: Avoid UPMC if you’ll need any tests or procedures.
